Gazing out at heaven

Straight ahead, a changing sea: raging yesterday, motionless today, mirroring the sky. Behind, white walls, tiered geometries in an interplay with the ragged rock face. A home that nestles in its surroundings while acknowledging an underlying duality: a place for retreat yet opened up to the outdoors.

Jordi Rodríguez Carreño has succeeded in transforming an Ibizan house from the 1970s to create a seemingly simple, harmonious ensemble of right angles cunningly worked into the steep coastline. On the one hand, it highlights the presence of the rock face through the plate glass windows at the back of the living room, enclosing the interior space; on the other, the main façade opens out onto the sky, the sun, and the sea. The horizontal axes of the windows and terraces tie into the horizon, the place where all gazes converge.

The house, split across three levels, each with its own terraces, includes two guest suites on the bottom floor for those who come to share this exceptional setting with their hosts. The main floor houses the day area for gathering, cooking together, sitting down to enjoy dinner, or lay back for a while in silence to take in the color of the sea. The master bedroom on the top floor has its own bathroom, dressing room, and study; nearby, a second bedroom has direct access to the outside.

The sequence of terraces and views in this unique home catches the eye from every point indoors, even from the kitchen set at the back of the large, open common space. The bulthaup b3 alpine white lacquer units and the polished white quartz worktop bathe the kitchen with light, while also underscoring the warmth of the tall unit fronts, made with the same walnut finish that was used throughout the rest of the house.

Outside, the gleaming surface of the infinity pool picks up the dark hues of its green mosaic tiling, contrasting with the white limestone of the large terrace surrounding it. This vast mirror is yet another bridge between the human touch and nature, halfway between domestic peace and the unpredictable forces of the sky and the sea.

The house on the cliffs: a place to gaze out at heaven.
